Removing thick layers of old paint, heavy rust, or tough timber burrs demands an abrasive with aggressive initial cut. Coarse grit sanding sponge uses P60–P80 aluminum oxide or silicon carbide to handle this first-pass stripping. The 100 × 70 × 25mm block compresses over uneven surfaces, allowing the coarse grit to dig into old coatings without gouging the underlying substrate. This grade is designed strictly for the front end of the job. When stripping an old wall, loose and flaking material is scraped off first, and the sponge works the remaining film. On timber, it removes saw ridges and heavy burrs. On metal, it removes mill scale and thick rust. After this coarse pass, the surface will show heavy scratch marks; it must be followed up with P120–P180 medium grit before any finish is applied.

The coarse sponge is heavily utilized in furniture stripping, metal fabrication cleanup, and architectural restoration. For dust-sensitive indoor demolition or field repair, the sponge can be used wet to suppress dust, although dry cutting is faster for heavy removal.
